B: Human Subject Participation in Psychology Experiments Purpose: The
purpose of this web page is to provide you, as a potential participant in
experiments conducted by the students and faculty of the psychology
department, with information pertinent to the ethical treatment of human
subjects. There
are three very important criteria mandated by the National Institute of
Health's Office for Protection from Research Risks (NIH/OPRR); (1) Respect
for Persons (volunteerism, informed consent, and anonymity), (2) Beneficence
(an obligation to improve our well-being and understanding of ourselves:
"do not harm"), and (3) Justice (receiving the benefits of
research). In addition, the American Psychological Association (APA) mandates
and details similar criteria for the ethical treatment of human subjects.
Details of APA's criteria are available to you in a publication called
Ethical Principles in the Conduct of Research with Human Participants
(available from any psychology faculty member). Another
purpose of this web page is to assure/reassure you that we are not in the
business of hurting you. We do not intend to harm you in any way or place you
in situations of undue risk. If you feel like you are being placed in sur-h-a
situation, you should discuss your concerns with faculty members of the
psychology department. Under no circumstances are you to feel like you are
being coerced (forced) into participation. Human
Subjects Committee: All psychology experiments involving human subjects at
Culver-Stockton College are categorized as "no risk" or
"minimal risk". 'We are not set up to conduct "at risk"
research projects (e.g., testing the effects of new drugs on behavior and
physiology, testing the effects of different kinds of therapy
techniques). These categories of risk are specified by NIH/OPRR and
APA. The
psychology department has formed a committee to review research proposals in
order to guarantee minimal risk which may result from participating in
psychology experiments. The committee currently consists of members of the
psychology department faculty, an an outside observer . We abide by the
guidelines set forth by APA. All experiments conducted by students and
faculty in the psychology department must be approved by the committee. Any
questions or concerns should be addressed to psychology department
faculty. Appointments: Sign-up sheets are located in the psychology foyer (J206). The sheets provide the time and location of a particular experiment. If you cannot keep your appointment, you may cancel. However, 24 hour notification is required. Cancellations may be made by phoning the psychology faculty member sponsoring the experiment, leaving a message on our voice m | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
