The Tri Sigma national sorority was founded in 1898 at by eight young women who had forged a close friendship while attending Normal School in Farmville, Virginia.  Margaret Batten, Louise Davis, Martha Fetherson, Isabella Merrick, Sallie Michie, Lelia Scott, Elizabeth Watkins, and Lucy Write began meeting and organizing in 1897 and announced their new sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma the following year on April 20th.

The sorority was incorporated and the Alpha chapter adopted the first constitution in 1903.  The Alpha chapter remains active today at Longwood University in Virginia. From this humble beginning, the national sorority now has more than 80,000 members.
