2009 Projects:
- Investment Portfolio
Need: To educate students on capital investments. Under the guidance of Business Advisory Board Member and C-SC Trustee Larry Gorrell, students research and recommend asset allocation for a $38,000 college endowment fund.
Results: This is an ongoing project. Students are learning research skills to gain the knowledge necessary to make portfolio recommendations.
- Duel on the Hill
Need: To provide high school students with an exciting case study competition focused on developing personal finance skills.Through this competition, students are able to take what they have learned in their business classes and apply it to a real-life financial scenario. As a result, these competitors have the opportunity to develop a better understanding of how to manage and invest their money. The practical knowledge and skills that these students gain will be immensely valuable for them now and in the future.
Action: Two weeks prior to the event each team was sent an identical case study. This case study involved a hypothetical family facing a serious financial dilemma. Students were given two weeks to research and prepare a solution. Each team then presented their plan to a panel of judges at the event on November 6.
Results: Eight teams, representing six high schools competed in the event and each provided stellar performances. All of the teams noted growth in numerous areas including financial literacy and presentation and research skills. The overall quality of the event was scored an impressive 4.63 out of 5. - Rental Renovation
Need: To develop skills in entrepreneurship by renovating and renting out an estate in the Canton community.
Action: Members of the SIFE team work Tuesdays and Thursdays, throughout the day, to prepare it to be livable for future tenants.
Results: Renovation is still in progress.
- Primo’s Cards
Need: To help fund our SIFE team by promoting an area small business.
Action: Primo’s is working to promote their business through the use of an award card. Customers receive points for each dollar they spend at the restaurant. The owner of Primo’s approached SIFE and requested our help with on-campus promotion of the card. The SIFE team set up a sign-up table outside of the cafeteria for a few weeks encouraging faculty, staff, and students to participate in the rewards program.
Results: SIFE signed up 100 members of the Culver community and, as a result, Primo’s saw a significant increase in sales. Within the first month, Primo’s saw a 37% increase in sales and about a 16% increase in the following months.
- Recycling Initiative
Need: To educate the campus and Canton community about the need to help make Culver-Stockton College more environmentally friendly.
Action: Working together with the community officials and the college administration to get the recycling program started. The next step was educating the community on what and how to recycle.
Results: All public buildings on campus will have recycling bins. Students provide most of the collection labor on campus and volunteer sorting on the drop off days at the site downtown.
- Lewis Street Playhouse
Need: To sustain our SIFE organization through community service and promoting the SIFE to community as a whole.
Action: Each Culver-Stockton College SIFE member was required to volunteer one day during the weekend at the Lewis Street Playhouse movie theater in Canton, MO.
Results: With help from our SIFE team, the Lewis Street Playhouse was able to continue to operate at a low cost and allowed the community to enjoy quality entertainment at a cheaper ticket price.
